Now that lockdown is (hopefully) behind us, it’s time to get our lives back on track; let’s declutter our homes of the Deliveroo boxes, cleanse our minds of the Netflix crime documentaries and give our bodies a much-needed detox!

Detoxing is a great way of cleansing our system of harmful bacteria while supporting the body’s natural method of neutralising toxins. The detox tips below can be added into daily routines for an extra added booster while giving our skin a fresh and youthful appearance throughout the seasons.

A Probiotic a Day

Start the day with a probiotic supplement. Take it with a large glass of water to rehydrate the system after a good nights sleep. Probiotics promote the natural health of the gut as they contain good bacteria. I love Best Naturals Probiotic supplements. They don’t need to be refrigerated, which is great for me as I’m always on the move, and they’re also suitable for vegans. For a high potency version, try the Neals Yard Pro Bio Boost supplement, it’s free from wheat, yeast and gluten.

The Detox Fuel

Drink warm water with fresh lemon juice every morning – it’s incredibly alkalising, despite what we might think about lemons being acidic (read my blog on the alkaline diet to find out why). Add in ginger root, (great for digestion), and fresh turmeric, for its wealth of health-benefiting properties. Wait at least 15 minutes before eating breakfast and take full advantage of the positive cleansing effects.

Body Brushing

Before getting having a shower use a body brush. My favourite is the one from Neals Yard as it has natural plant fibre bristles, making it less harsh on the skin, yet effective enough to exfoliate away dead skin particles. Skin brushing helps to improve the skin’s tone and texture as well as increase blood circulation. Use light sweeping motions, moving in the direction of the heart centre. Do, however, be careful not to apply too much pressure, as the lymph won’t drain effectively from the nodes.

Eat your Greens

For breakfast have a green juice, it’s a great way of packing veggies in before starting the day. My favourite juice consists of 1 apple (apple helps to detoxify the liver and makes the juice taste sweeter), 1 celery stalk, 1 cucumber, a handful of spinach, the juice of a lemon, a splash of aloe vera to aid digestion, and a scoop of Neals Yard Superfood Organic Greens Blend. You can probably tell that I love Neal’s Yard products by now, but this mixture contains all the dark leafy greens needed to aid detoxification, as well as green tea, wheatgrass, chlorella and spirulina. I also like to take chlorella tablets daily, usually after exercising, as they are a detoxifying source of protein.

Tea-toxing

Throughout the day drink herbal detox teas. There are so many on the market these days, but my personal favourite is Qi Organic Detox Green Tea as it combines milk thistle which is a natural herb excellent for treating liver problems. I’m also a fan of anything that includes green tea as it boosts the metabolism and helps defy the ageing process with its high antioxidant content.

Tackle the Toxic Stuff

Reduce or remove inflammatory foods from your diet completely: gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, sugar, refined foods, coffee and alcohol. I try to have a dry month once a year. Taking part in ‘Dry January’ is always good, or ‘Stoptober’. Try raising a little money for charity, and then you know you’ll definitely stick to what you’ve set out to achieve. You’ll soon start to notice remarkable effects on your skin, energy levels and mood.

Kimchi & Kombucha

Incorporate fermented foods into your diet as they contain probiotic enzymes which are good for the gut and aid digestion. Unfortunately, I detest kimchi (a fermented food) and just can’t seem to acquire a taste for it. I do however like kombucha, which has a similar effect on the digestive system. My favourite is from Biona Kombucha as it uses few ingredients and doesn’t contain sugar.

Shed with an Infrared

If you can somehow hunt down an infrared sauna then you’re in for the ultimate detoxifying experience. Luckily for me, there’s one at my gym, but I’m sure there are tonnes of others dotted around. An infrared sauna eliminates around 7 times more toxins than a normal sauna and is fantastic for improving circulation, purifying the skin, and aiding in weight loss.

Thank you so much for reading my post, I hope you benefit from the tips provided. I would love to know about your experiences. Roberta x
